Urns found at illegal dumping site in Townsville

You expect to see old mattresses or dumped rubbish by the side of the road, but urns? That’s what left one Townsville volunteer speechless this week.

As reported by Yahoo News Australia, local clean-up organiser Dave Dudley discovered two urns abandoned at a known dumping hotspot near Black River Bridge. The urns were found resting on an embankment alongside boots and other litter, and no one quite knows what to make of them.

“I’ve never found one before,” Dave told Yahoo. Unsure if the urns contained ashes, human or otherwise, he did what many in the Snap Send Solve community would: he reported the find through the app and waited for the council to investigate.

A new low in illegal dumping?

Townsville has seen its fair share of illegal dumping over the years, everything from unopened chips to septic tanks. But this one struck a different chord. And it’s not just a local issue. Similar discoveries have been made overseas, from Texas to Las Vegas, raising the same question: why?

As Dave said, “Dumping a beloved puppy dog or cat is just weird.” Whether it’s pet remains or something more serious, discarding urns like rubbish is confronting and unfair to everyone using or maintaining these public spaces.

When you come across something that clearly doesn’t belong, is odd, unsettling, or just plain wrong, don’t ignore it.

Do as Dave did and send a Snap to help make sure it’s taken care of properly.
