Victoria’s roads are under the microscope following a major ABC News Melbourne investigation. While the state government has announced a $1 billion roads blitz in this year's budget, Snap Send Solve data featured in the segment reveals that the pothole problem is growing faster than it can be fixed.
The report highlighted a significant 28% increase in reports of potholes and damaged roads over the past 12 months, proving that Victorian motorists are more motivated than ever to flag hazards.
The ABC used our data to show that the bumpy ride is felt most acutely in regional areas.
While urban reports are steady, regional Victoria is seeing a massive spike in community action:
- South West Victoria: A staggering 149% jump in reports.
- Shepparton: Reports increased by 70%.
These numbers reflect a ticking time bomb for road maintenance, with residents describing their daily commute as a game of dodgem cars to avoid vehicle damage and broken rims.
Our CEO, Danny Gorog, explained to the ABC that motorists are no longer willing to ignore the decline in road quality.
"Motorists are annoyed; they’re taking the time to let the responsible authority know. In many cases, that’s a local council, but in a lot of cases, it’s the state government."
With the government attributing much of the disrepair to extreme weather events and flooding, the 31,000+ reports logged through the app over the last year provide the essential evidence needed to prioritise where that $1 billion investment goes.
