What is overgrown vegetation?
Differing council areas across Australia and New Zealand have different rules around overgrown vegetation, and define overgrown vegetation differently. Generally speaking, all vegetation that is not confined to your property’s perimeter may be considered an obstruction, unless there is a clearance of 2.5 metres.
When you report overgrown trees, gardens, hedges and other hedges, someone from your local council will attend the site and make an assessment of the situation. They will then take the appropriate next steps if necessary to ensure the public area is safe and clean.

What is vegetation removal?
Vegetation removal usually involves the physical extraction or chemical expiration of overgrown, and often unsightly, plants and plant matter. When vegetation is removed this may include the whole plant, including its root structure, or just trimming the excess which is overgrown, so the plant can survive.

So, what happens next?
When you Snap overgrown vegetation, your photos, notes and location information help the Solver at your local council pinpoint active issues and start working to Solve them.
Once a Solver from your council has reviewed your Snap, they will send someone to attend the property to inspect the issue. Depending on the level of risk, the Solver will give the property owners 14 days to address the encroaching vegetation. If the owner does not respond, a Solver from your council will re-inspect the property and provide the property owners with a formal Notice to remove the overgrown vegetation if necessary.
Failure to act may, in some circumstances, lead to the vegetation being cleared with the costs charged to the property owners. In some council areas, fines may also be issued to the relevant parties.
