Election Signage Taking Over Australia

November 6, 2024

Improperly placed election signage is on the rise, and has nearly tripled since the 2019 election. Whether in public parks, on council property or power poles, illegally placed advertising can cause accessibility, safety and environmental issues.

Every Council area has different rules regarding the display of election advertising, some of the common requirements are:*

  • Signage should not be on display for longer than 14 days after the election (or for three months from installation date, whichever is sooner)
  • Signage should not to distract or obscure the view of motorists, cyclists pedestrians
  • Election corflutes and posters must not be attached to vegetation or council infrastructure
  • Signage should be attached securely to prevent injury, damage to property or environmental hazard
  • Election signage should not be made from reflecting or illuminating materials

The free Snap Send Solve app automatically directs reports to the responsible authority to take it down. Be sure to keep an eye out for any improperly placed signage and report it with Snap Send Solve.

*Please check your local Council website to find out which rules apply to your region
