Victoria is gearing up for its most expensive road blitz in history, but as 10 News Melbourne recently reported, the $1 billion budget splash might be a case of playing catch-up. Using Snap Send Solve data, the segment highlighted a staggering 28% surge in pothole reports over the last year, a clear sign that our roads are crumbling faster than they can be patched.
With nearly 32,000 reports hitting the app in Victoria alone, the data confirms that the state has officially earned the title of Pothole Capital of Australia.
The 10 News investigation used our reporting data to pinpoint exactly where the infrastructure is failing. It’s not just a regional issue; the heart of the city is feeling the impact:
- Inner Melbourne: Reports are up almost 50% compared to last year.
- Melbourne South-East & Mornington Peninsula: Identified as key hotspots where reporting is surging.
- Statewide: A total of 31,729 reports, marking a 28% increase year-on-year.
While the government’s billion-dollar pledge aims to fill 200,000 potholes, our CEO, Danny Gorog, shared a reality check with 10 News. Despite the cash splash, the frequency and volume of new potholes are still outpacing current maintenance efforts.
"Obviously, the billion dollars hasn't been enough to kind of stop that... It's a problem that there are more potholes more frequently," Danny noted in the segment.
