3AW: Victorian pothole reports up nearly 120% in August

Here's a fun fact for you: our CEO Danny Gorog's surname is a palindrome, smooth and symmetrical no matter which way you read it. Victoria's roads can't say the same.

Danny joined 3AW this week to talk potholes, and he didn't hold back on the numbers. Victoria has now racked up more than 40,000 pothole reports across both state and council-managed roads, and August alone saw reports jump almost 120% compared to the same month last year.

To put that in perspective, potholes made up just 4% of all Victorian reports last August. This year, they're over 7%, more than doubling their share in just twelve months.

Danny didn't need the data to know something was up, either. Fresh off a weekend drive around the Mornington Peninsula, he described dodging one oversized pothole after another:

"You kind of brace yourself in the car when you know you're going to go over one."

If you've felt that same brace-for-impact moment lately, you're not imagining it. The numbers back you up.

So what actually happens once you Snap that pothole?

Danny explained that reports come with a photo and a precise location, giving councils and the state government a clear picture of where the worst damage is, and letting them hear from multiple people about the very same pothole, which helps with prioritising repairs.
